An infographic, by its very nature, is a concise visual designed to communicate lots of complex data or information. Infographic visuals add interest and clarity to complicated or unfamiliar statistics that might otherwise be overlooked by readers.
So how do you go about creating an infographic? Here are a few tips to get you started.
- Establish a graphic theme. Use a color palette and illustration style that is appropriate to your message. A serious message about automobile accident statics or cancer deaths requires a sensitive graphic approach and treatment. On the other hand, an infographic detailing America’s soft drink choices can be fun and playful.
- Keep the statistics and data brief. Let the illustration or graphic styling tell the story; that’s the whole point of an infographic. If there are key percentages or important numbers in your statistics, it’s acceptable and even advisable to make them larger, bolder and brighter in the text callouts.
- Tell a story. Design the infographic to encompass a single idea made up of individual, cohesive thoughts. Don’t allow the component thoughts to get lost or separated in a sea of background color and images. Pull the design elements together in a manner that allows the reader to scan all of the information quickly and come away with the main thought.
- Be entertaining. By using the appropriate illustrations, color and graphics for your message, your reader will stay engaged. The overall theme should be captivating enough to pull the reader in closer with each component statement or statistic.
With a clever theme, appropriate color palette, creative typography and eye-catching illustrations, your infographic will simplify, clarify and entertain. White papers will pale in comparison.
